The Ciaccona is the fifth movement of Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004. Magnificent in terms of its length, form, plot, texture and emotional scope, it has offered fertile soil for arrangements or transcriptions to such prolific masters as Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Busoni. It has also served as an archetype for the composition of new music by subsequent generations of composers, including Bartók, Gerhard, Martin, Ligeti, Britten, Penderecki and Gubaidulina. In the Ciaccona, through an exceptional discipline of form and a highly sophisticated use of thematic context, Bach invites us on a deeply immersive, cathartic journey in three acts: the meditative ‘Kyrie eleison’ of part I, the ecstatic ‘Gloria’ of part II, and the mystical ‘Crucifixus’ of part III. Drawing on the core of his personal faith, the composer offers a communion for all; a mirror that reflects everyone’s God, or God within everyone. SG
